Open 3D Modeling allows a user to extend traditional 2D CAD drawing methods and processes into a 3D environment.  Kubotek technology provides a unique and exceptionally productive workflow to the conceptual modeling and part information management processes.

Open 3D Modeling uses basic entities such as lines and arcs as building blocks to create more complex entities such as surfaces and solids.  Treating entities as equals simplifies the use of the software.  A common set of editing and data management functions is applied to all types of geometry. The system supports a simple, unstructured mode of building model/construction geometry and planning arrangement/fit in the conceptual stage.  During this phase of design there is no need for concern about the number of separate parts the final design will include or which part each piece of geometry belongs.

A major advantage of Kubotek technology over typical Windows-based CAD management systems is the flexibility to define part relationships and file distribution strategies that will occur at a later stage in the design.  Our technology allows designers to distribute associative parts and drawings to a select number of files or include all the data within in a single file.  Typical Windows-based CAD management systems force each part, detail drawing and assembly drawing to be stored in separate files - usually forcing these structure decisions to be made at the conceptual stage.  Using Kubotek technology, a straight-forward part or highly complex machine can begin as a level-managed assembly in one file and evolve to referenced assemblies.  Working work the way you want is much more productive than following the dictates of the software.

Kubotek technology provides a complete set of explicit positioning modes, a grid-based snap mode, and configurable dynamic position snapping to allow users full control of the critical position selection process.  Selected positions in 3D space can optionally be projected onto the active 2D construction plane.  Location x,y,z coordinates can always be easily entered in either global or local coordinate systems.  All of these powerful options are universally available whenever a position entry is needed.

Kubotek products allow users incredible power for sorting the selection of entities/objects to be processed in a function.  For example, selection sets can be built from multiple filters and inverse filters based on criteria such as location in/out of a specified rectangle or on a given plane, specific colors, line types, layers, and groups.  Face selection offers options to toggle through potential single selections and unique capabilities to find groups of faces that form specific features such as pockets, holes, blends, patterns and more.  Selection power adds up to significant time savings as it is among the most repeated steps throughout a design session.

To further support management of data within a single file the system provides a sophisticated layering (level) system which includes unique sub-level capabilities, similar to levels of folders in Windows Explorer.   A virtually unlimited number of levels support naming and numbering, hiding, locking and filtering, plus attribute defaults by level.  Data sorted by level during the conceptual stage can be easily converted to a linked file reference later in the design project.


The associativity between files and the associativity of copies of parts within a file that is provided by the system automatically propagates changes in a part to all assemblies and drawings where that part has been linked.  This saves both time and errors during updating and redesign cycles and encourages the creation of a vault of shared parts.

File Locking
Kubotek products provide simple file locking similar to the capabilities found in Microsoft office.  If a file is opened by another user, the option to acess as read-only will appear.  This basic feature provides the important benefit of preventing unintended overwriting of work in progress by other team members without introducing cumbersome permissions systems.

Each Kubotek CKD file, and each Part within a CKD file, has a segment reserved for user entry of text information such as Part Number, Revision Number, Created By, Vendor, etc.  Users can also create any custom fields of their choice.  This information can be accessed by the search function in Windows Explorer to aid in locating specific parts.  The information can also be linked to notes in template files and title blocks to save time and reduce errors.

Kubotek provides full support for OLE objects such as images, spreadsheets, and movies from OLE server-compliant Windows programs to be inserted or linked into CKD files.  This capability provides quick reuse of existing data in its original format.  An example is loading a scanned JPG drawing in order to trace over its rough raster curves with precise geometry.
